Food distribution

Weekly food deliveries to families and individuals

Food Distribution is a weekly volunteering activity through which IYC Suomi delivers food directly to families and individuals who need practical support.

The activity is organised as a home-delivery service for previously registered beneficiaries. It is not an open distribution point, so food cannot be collected from the meeting place without prior arrangement.

How the activity works

Before each distribution, volunteers meet at the designated starting point to organise the available food and prepare the deliveries. The contents of each delivery depend on the products available that week and the needs of the households included in the route.

Once the food has been sorted and packed, volunteers load the deliveries into the vehicles and travel together along a planned route. The food is then delivered directly to each beneficiary's home.

Volunteers may help with:

  • Sorting and organising food
  • Preparing bags and boxes
  • Loading and unloading vehicles
  • Driving or accompanying a driver
  • Carrying deliveries to beneficiaries' homes
  • Checking that each household receives the correct delivery
  • Organising the meeting point after the route

Volunteers may also have a brief conversation with the people receiving the food. These personal encounters are an important part of the activity, particularly for beneficiaries who live alone or have limited contact with other people.

When does it take place?

Food Distribution takes place every week, normally on Fridays and Saturdays.

The usual times are:

Fridays: approximately 15:30-18:00 Saturdays: approximately 10:30-13:00

The exact finishing time may vary depending on the number of deliveries, traffic conditions and the length of the route.

Who can volunteer?

No previous experience is required. Volunteers receive instructions before the route begins.

Drivers and volunteers with access to a car are particularly valuable, but it is also possible to participate without driving.

Because the activity involves visiting people in their homes, volunteers must respect beneficiaries' privacy. Personal information, addresses, photographs and individual circumstances must not be shared without permission.

Advance registration is required so that the team can organise the routes, vehicles and number of volunteers.

Requesting food support

Requests for food support are assessed individually. IYC Suomi's ability to accept new beneficiaries depends on the amount of food available, the delivery area, transportation capacity and the number of active volunteers.

Submitting a request does not guarantee immediate or regular deliveries. Food Distribution is a community volunteering activity and does not replace emergency assistance or public social services.
