Moments for others

Weekly companionship and social support

Moments for Others is a weekly volunteering activity for people who may experience loneliness or social isolation.

Volunteers offer their time and companionship to older people and other individuals who would benefit from regular human contact. The purpose is not to provide professional care, but to create opportunities for conversation, shared activities and meaningful social interaction.

What happens during a visit?

Each visit is organised according to the interests, circumstances and mobility of the person being visited.

Activities may include:

  • Talking over coffee or tea
  • Going for a short walk
  • Playing cards or board games
  • Reading together
  • Listening to music
  • Discussing memories, everyday life or current events
  • Taking part in a simple activity outside the home
  • Spending time together without a fixed programme

The activity does not require volunteers to entertain or organise a special programme during every visit. Listening, being present and showing genuine interest are often the most important parts of the experience.

How are visits organised?

Visits are agreed in advance by IYC Suomi and may take place in a person's home, a residential setting or another suitable location.

Before the first visit, volunteers receive the practical information needed to participate. Personal details are only shared when necessary for organising the activity.

Participation always requires the consent of the person receiving the visit. Volunteers must respect confidentiality and may not share names, addresses, personal stories or photographs without explicit permission.

When does it take place?

Moments for Others is organised every week.

The exact day and time depend on the availability of the volunteer and the person receiving the visit. Some visits may be occasional, while others may develop into a regular arrangement.

Regular participation is particularly valuable because it provides continuity and allows trust to develop over time.

The role of the volunteer

Volunteers offer companionship and social contact. They are not expected to provide:

  • Medical assistance
  • Personal care
  • Cleaning or household services
  • Financial advice
  • Professional psychological support
  • Help with tasks for which specialist training is required

Any concern about a beneficiary's wellbeing should be communicated to the IYC Suomi coordinator rather than managed by the volunteer independently.

Who can participate?

No professional qualifications are required. Volunteers should be reliable, patient, respectful and comfortable interacting with people from different backgrounds.

Family members, professionals and community organisations may also contact IYC Suomi to suggest someone who could benefit from the activity. Every request is assessed individually and visits can only begin when there is a suitable volunteer available.
